State Fundraising Licenses in the USA

Fundraising in the United States is regulated at the state level. Each state has its own procedure to determine whether a charity or nonprofit is authorized to fundraise in that state. Most states require charities to obtain state fundraising licenses to fundraise in the state legally. Charities must file for a charitable registration license register before they begin solicitation activities in the state.

The charitable registration process consists of filing a fundraising license registration form and submitting additional required information, including the founding documents for the organization, the IRS determination letter, a list of officers and directors, and the organization’s most recent IRS Form 990 tax return. Once the initial fundraising license is granted, nonprofits must submit annual state renewal filings to keep the state fundraising licenses current.
